I was born in Monterey, California in 1952 to a Navy officer and a violent alcoholic. Alcoholism is a hereditary disease, and I inherited it, though I seem to have beaten it in recent years. Anyway, the less said about my childhood, the better. I left home the day after I graduated high school and drove to California to be a hippy for the rest of my life. That didn’t work out, so I eventually went to college and law school.
